Take a Look, It’s in a Book 📚

This week I wanted to take a moment to reflect on and highlight my love for our local library. I understand that technically the library isn’t free because our taxes are used to pay for it, but to me it just feels like one of the few free pleasures in life. Here are 3 things that you might not know about our local library:

  1. Free audiobooks through Libby.

I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to paying $15 a month for one audiobook on Audible, when I can get practically unlimited audiobooks on Libby for free! Sometimes you might have to wait before you can download your book depending on how many other people also want to borrow it, but to me it’s still worth the money saved. You can also put a lot of different books on hold so that something is always becoming available to download.

Here’s a nerdy tip that I personally utilize; when you travel to a new town you can get a library card there. If your local library doesn’t have a particular book on Libby, you might be able to find it at a different library. This is all completely above board, Libby doesn’t care how many library cards you have, and the only requirement for most libraries in California is that you are a California resident. Also, if you like graphic novels or manga, the Hoopla app has a ton of them, free.

  2. Online Borrowing > Online Shopping

You can put books on hold through the online catalog and the library will email you when they're ready to be picked up. Being able to put books on hold has helped me slow down on compulsive online shopping, now I just compulsively add books to my hold list 😏 . If your local library doesn't have the book that you want but one of the libraries in the interlibrary system does, they’ll send it to your local library!

  3. Need a Specialty Cake Pan? Borrow One!

Not only can you rent books, movies, audiobooks, and graphic novels from the library, you can also rent microscopes, bluetooth speakers, and ukuleles. The local library offers numerous items that you can borrow free of charge through their Library of Things program. I’ve personally rented a metal detector before, and once summer rolls around I think I want to check out a telescope.

Like Arthur said, having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card.

Community in Action:

Last week I wrote about meeting with Toni of Toni’s Burger and More (11975 Highway 70), and learning about their new Hot Meal Program. The aim of this program is to provide Butte county families a hot meal, free of charge. I’m happy to report that the Hot Meal Program is still thriving and there’s plenty of open spots available weekly! Here’s the flyer for next weeks meal:

This program is available to anybody wanting a plate. As Toni wrote on Facebook last week, “It's not only for low income it is for the all the above if your to tired to cook or had a long week or just can't afford to cook or don't have a way to cook whatever the reason may be we are here and want to help”

The Hot Meal Program will be running at Toni’s Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday 1-3pm. For those interested in signing up, or in the position to help, reach out to Toni on facebook, by visiting tonisburgersandmore.com or by calling 530-533-3252

Question of the Month:

I’m still in search of the best burrito in the North State. I’ve gotten a few suggestions so far, but I’m hoping to get a few more since I have a few more subscribers now. I don’t want to crown a place the best because 1 or 2 people said it was. If that was the only criteria, my wife and I could just keep believing Antonios was champ 😏

Antonio’s Quick Lunch (716 Colusa Ave)

I’m ready to get this burrito tour started already! Let me know who’s the best and If my family happens to pick your local spot as our new favorite, lunch is on me! 😁

Thanks for reading this issue of Good News: North State! I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope to see you out there in the community. If you have some good news that you would like to see covered, or just have some feedback to share, I’m all ears. Until next week.

If you enjoy starting off your week with Good News, consider donating to the project. All donation proceeds will go towards website maintenance/hosting, travel expenses, and highlighting North State destinations and events that you and your family will love. Thank you.
